On the top of a hill near Palmyra, the Arabs have built a castle in the 17th century, Qala-at ibn Maan. In the insert one can see how it looks from Palmyra. It is possible to climb the hill straight up or to walk around it and follow a paved road to the top. The castle is usually locked, but can be opened for a small fee. But it is already interesting just to get to its gates and look down at Palmyra from there.
